View 5.1.2 Problem with Smart Cards - Desktop not seeing reader.

$

Hi all,

We're trying to roll out a Linked Clone desktop pool that will be used by our Accounts department and as such they need to be able to use Smart Cards for banking purposes. We've installed all the necessary software on the template machine (GemSafe Gemalto) and also connected one of our Thin Clients (Wyse V10L or C10LE) to the template directly via RDP with the Smart Card Reader attached to make sure the various drivers install correctly and all is well, the VM is able to see the Smart Card Reader.

The issue comes when we roll these machines out to the pool, the Smart Card Reader isn't being detected at all. We've tried connecting from the Thin Client through View or via RDP directly to one of the Linked Clone desktops and both methods experience the same behavior, i.e. the reader isn't seen at all. If we plug/unplug the reader from the Wyse terminal we can see it being detected within the Event Log on the Thin Client itself.

What tools or logs can we use on the View or VMware side to troubleshoot this issue?

To confirm, in the Connection Server settings Smart Card Authentication is set to Optional. In Global Policies USB access is set to Allowed.

If any further information is required please ask and I'll be happy to provide it.

Thanks in advance.

Invoke-script with the get-credential command

Hi guys,

I'm trying to get the invoke-VMScript to work using get-credential command.  I'd like to use this method because it seems easier and more secure than storing the information in a config file of some kind.  Here is my code:

$domaincred = 'DOMAIN\user'

Echo "Enter the credentials used to modify virtual machines"

$d=get-credential $domaincred

Invoke-VMScript -VM CIV2 -ScriptText "ipconfig /release" -Credential $d

A similar commands work fine to log into the vCenter, but when attempting to do this using the invoke-VMScript command I get:

nvoke-VMScript : A parameter cannot be found that matches parameter name'Credential'.

Any ideas?

Install WebClient 6.0

Hi Guys,

we've been waiting for the 6.0 RC version to come.  Now its here horrah!! (That's what we thought...).  We read that you can connect a WebClient 6.0 to a 5.50 vCenter - so we thought were ready to start...  But after 2 days of frustration - we have to ask .. Please help!

We are doing our plugin development on a VM.  Our vCenter Server(s) are location on other machines.

I read the vSphere WebClient SDK Setup, ->To install VWC in your development machine

The second option was to use the installer to install the WebClient - this is how we have done it for previous versions:

So I mounted the ISO and searched for a "VMware-WebClient.exe" - there is none found and the directory structure on the .iso is different than before.  I looked under

vCenter-Server/Packages and found VMware-WebClient.msi, but starting this doesn't work either.

I read that you can start the real installation with autorun.exe - and choose the WebClient installation only.

So I added a 2.nd processor to my VM, and set my Memory to 8176MB - and started the installation.  I could choose to install a vCenter only,

but there is no option to install the WebClient only.  The installation wanted to install a vCenter Server on my VM.

Next try was to unzip the serenity-client and define that as my Virgo Runtime - I edited the client.properties with the lookup url and thumbprint.

Then I started the Server - and found many errors in the Virgo.log

One of the first ones were:

...     com.vmware.vise.vim.cm.impl.AfdCMSource Error when talking to afd client java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError: null

.......

Cannot resolve reference to bean "ssoServiceImpl" while setting constructor argument; nested ........... The URL of the VMware Component Manager cannot be empty.

....

I thought that all might be caused, due to my current installed WebClient 5.5 U2 - so I unistalled that. and restarted the Virgo Server.

This did not help either.

So at least for me, both of the options mentioned in the  SDK Setup won't work.  At least they don't work as described. I'm attaching the Virgo log for

more Information.  2 of my collegues have had similar experiences.

Please help! we are really exited to get started.

We recently upgraded our VDI platform to VMWare View 6.1 using vSphere 6.0 and Nvidia vGPU (Grid K1). (HP T310 ZeroClient 4.7.1)

Some of our users complaining about disconnects, some users have this error more then others.

Mouse stops moving and after 30 seconds a disconnect.

Hello all,

we have vcenter 5.5 running with our esx environment.

we experience a problems a few weeks ago that i have never seen before we had a that vm was powered on but inaccessible. you could remote to the vm with RDP and attempt to login to the console from vcenter but it would not accept the login. it  would continue to say access denied. so i rebooted the machine and attempted to login without issue. Figured it was just a one off situation. However yesterday same thing occur with our file server. would accept rdp and console connection but would not allow users to login or access mapped drives. So i rebooted the server and all was restored. So i'm confused on what the issue maybe. Did a dcdiag on dcs and all tested are passing without issue. Could this be a bug in the vmware tools ? need help please ??????

Workstation 10.0.4 introduced "internal error" if vmware-authd service not running

$

The just released v10.0.4 must be doing more than the tersely documented "fix memory issue on ms-win 8.1". It appears to have introduced some new internal dependency that requires the vmware-authd service to be always running, even in cases that used to work fine in v10.0.3 without it.

Case in point: Win7 x64 host, XP Mode imported guest trimmed down to the barest hardware (no usb in particular). Used to work under Workstation v10.0.3 with none of the VMware services started on the host. After upgrading to v10.0.4, it now fails upfront with an "internal error" message box. Manually starting the vmware-authd service prior to booting the vm allows it to work again.

I hope this "windows 8.1" fix could itself be fixed as to not penalize everyone else. Thanks.

Comportamento anomalo vRam nell'utilizzo di due macchine virtuali

Buongiorno a tutti,

All'interno ho due OS

Sapete aiutarmi?

Grazie mille

old topic, cold cloning

I need to cold clone a windows 2003 server.  I have tried doing a hot P2V and it fails everytime with a VSS snapshot error that I cannot resolve after many hours of troubleshooting.  I managed to find a copy of the coldclone.iso boot cd, but it does not have the correct raid drivers.  I cannot find a copy of the PETOOL.EXE file to add the drivers to the bootcd.  Does anyone have a link where i can download petool.exe from?  Or does anyone have any better or more current cold cloning procedures?  I've spent hours researching for a better way and can't seem to find one.

thanks

What's actually worthwhile in Workstation 11?

$

Is there anything actually worth upgrading for in VMware WS 11?

I see "new operating system support", but I've no idea what that actually means as I've run those OSes in WS 10 just fine. Except for Windows 10, which has terrible graphics performance, and still does on WS 11.

There's some mention of Haswell support but no details as to what it actually is. Probably just AVX support? They updated some drivers, too? "Updated NDIS drive" I assume is a typo.

Hilariously, they go on to say that 3D support won't work with WS 11 if you use a Linux not on their list, or if you *use Microsoft Office*. And USB headsets won't work.

Then they list a few other bugfixes which ... should just be fixed instead of requiring a new version. (WS 10 would crash about once a day with Windows guests, maybe that'll go away but I'm not hopeful.)

I'm feeling really disappointed. I don't see anything noteworthy. It *feels* like, since Workstation is essentially the only high-grade product for end-user virtualization on Windows, they're just sitting around. And of course, they're terrified by Hyper-V on the ESXi side (the enterprise blogs are vicious; it's sorta funny how fierce both sides got. I especially loved how VMware kept retreating to pointing out whatever esoteric feature HV was missing, and MS just closed that gap bit by bit).

But WS doesn't really fit into VMware's model, does it? So they get a $150 from a few end users... big deal? Does WS revenue even make a rounding error in their financials?

Am I missing something here?

When I tunnel the traffic, the certificate is used from the connection server or security server, but when I don't want to tunnel the traffic, a self signed certificate is used to secure the connection to the desktop. The user is getting a message that the connection is untrusted (because of the self signed certificate). If I read this: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/horizon-view/horizon-html-access-document.pdf it says I can replace the self signed certificate, but I need to replace it on each desktop individually! This means I can't replace the certificate in the golden-image, which I use to create the linked-clones. Is there a way to automate the replacement of the self-signed certificate for HTML5 Access, or can/should I use a wildcard certificate in the golden-image?

10Gb DAC (Direct Attach Copper) - Pros and Cons with ESXi 6

Hi folks,

I am specifying a new VMWare cluster. The core network fabric[1] will be 10gig (or better) - 2 links per host, one each to a separate switch for redundancy. The switches will have an interlink. Main Internet links will go on separate 1gig links.

[1] iSCSI, vMotion, management etc.

Someone put it to me that there may be some savings in cost using DAC links rather than 10GbE copper as I was planning. I understand the latter, but I have never used DAC cables. The only time I've gone near SFP(+) I was actually plugging (mini)GBICs in to use fibre.

Apart from restricted length (not a problem, all in one cabinet) are there any subtle pros and cons to using DAC cables and matchings switches and network cards in the ESXi hosts? For this discussion, assume I will be using vSAN so there will be no hardware SAN to worry about.

With SFP+ is it true that I might be able to get the links running at 4x10gig per link with ESXi6 ? Sorry - silly question, but this particular technology is new to me.

Can Fusion boot from USB Drives?

I was wondering if there is a workaroud to boot from external drives? I do computer repair, and it would be great to work on an OS (ie Windows) by just plugging it in directly to my Macbook and having the software recognize the drive as internal so it can boot properly..

Thanks!

Unable to purge Detected inaccessible objects in VSAN

Hello Folks,

I've got a situation with my VSAN in my home lab. I recently did an upgrade to 6.0 and VSAN needs to be upgraded so when I do that from RVC, using the command:

/localhost/vNEST Datacenter> vsan.v2_ondisk_upgrade ~cluster

+--------+-----------+-------------+----------------+----------------+

It says, it detected the objects, fine, but when I go to purge these objects:

/localhost/vNEST Datacenter> vsan.purge_inaccessible_vswp_objects ~cluster

What is happening here? I've moved all the VMs out of vsandatastore to another datastore. I was thinking about deleting the vsandatastore and recreating it but I do want to figure this out and know what the issue is?

thanks

V2V conversion failing

I am currently preparing to stand up a new View 6 environment. I currently have two environments: a vSphere 5.0/View 5.1 environment with some XP holdouts, and the current production vSphere 5.5/View 5.3 environment. I am attempting to move c. 10 XP machines that cannot yet be upgraded from the old environment to the new with the standalone converter. About 7 of the 10 have migrated just fine, but three of them refuse to do so. I don't even get beyond the first stage: the converter hangs at "Retrieving source machine information" for approximately 10 minutes, and then fails with the error "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine". The process actually locks the vmdk file, forcing me to manually release before I can power it back on.

As I mentioned, it is just these few machines, which were originally P2V machines, that are failing. Unfortunately, due to their criticality I can just rebuild them. Hoping someone has seen something similar, or has some suggestions.
