I'm running VMWare Workstation 11 on a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 host. I have a piece of software that I need and it will only run on Windows 95/98 and need to save finished files on my Host, so I have a Windows 98 SE VM with the network configured to NAT. I can't connect to my host via file sharing, something about windows 7 not using NETBEUI anymore. I tried connecting with just Client for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP. I have Internet and can see my host in Network Neighborhood but cant connect. All other VMs connect fine (except DOS 6.22). Even Linux connects via SAMBA. I'm a certified P.C. Technician so don't worry about being to technical.

VShield EndPoint & VNXe
We recently deployed a VNXe. We're using it for our vSphere 5.5 environment. We also just deployed vShield EndPoint. As I'm sure many of you know, when you deploy vShield Endpoint, it creates a vSwitch with a VMkernel port group with the IP address of 169.254.1.1. Every host that you enable for vShield Endpoint has the vswitch and uses the same 169.254.1.1 IP Address.
Everything works fine, but on the VNX side, we see the warning "one or more IP addresses of host <esxi host name> are conflicting with other hosts". Due to this, all the hosts with EndPoint show a warning status
The IP address conflict makes sense since the vSwitch on every host is using the same 169.254.1.1 IP address. I was just wondering if anyone else is having the same issue. It is not supported by VMware to change the 169.254.1.1 IP address and EMC support couldn't provide much help.
.vmem file and encypted VMs
Hi;
I'm under the impression that .vmem files relate to the guest virtual machines memory contents.(I'm not sure exactly what they do as opposed to the Hosts swap/paging file).
Are the .vmem files associated with a Guest VM while running (or in snapshots) a security exposure (on the host) for Encrypted Virtual machines? (I have VMWare Workstation 11).
Or does the VM encryption extend to the .vmem file as well as the other files associated with the Guest VM?
Would there be a way to not use .vmem files (and would it be significantly slower)?
Thanks;
vmware player not sharing firewire 410 audio device
I'm running windows 7 64bit sp1 host machine, vmware player 6.0.4, and guest machine windows xp sp3. I have an m-audio firewaire 410 sound device connected but the windows xp guest can't see the device. I have the firewire 410 (multichannel) listed in vmware as the sound device, I have the m-audio drivers installed in both windows 7 (host) and windows xp (guest). In the uppar right corner of the vmware guest window it shows the audio device as Multichannel (M-Audio FW 410) connected but windows xp does not see the device. It previously saw and used the via sound card I have on the machine motherboard. I can't work out why windows 7 is not sharing the firewire device. Thanks for any pointers.
vGPU and Catia: App Crashes due to drivers?
vGPU K1
348.07 Nvidia Windows/ESXi Drivers
Horizon View 6.0.1 2088845
ESXi 6.0 GA 2494585
2vCPU 4GB Mem Windows 7 x64
Target Applications:
Catia
TransMagic Expert
These applications keep crashing during "drawing manipulations" and other actions.
The word from Dassault (Catia) is that "video driver issues that cause Catia to panic and terminate the program immediately."
Anyone else running vGPU with Catia without app crashes out there? If so, what's your config?
Remove stale semaphore
Hello All,
How to check and remove stale semaphore using semaphore is like we have in Linux ipcrm -s <semaphoreid>
using Vsish I could only query the semaphore sets and count
[root@localhost:~] vsish

Cannot install VMware Workstation 11.1.1 on Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit - please help
Want to install VMware Workstation 11.1.1 on new Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit PC.
I had VMware Workstation 11.1.0, and the installer removed the original version but will not complete the install of the new version
The installer gets about 2/3 way (progress bar) and then hangs, Windows event viewer says installer has hung.
Tried running without firewall and AV on, still won't install same issue
Ran the installer with /clean option and then tried again but still it will not complete the installation process (hangs at the same place)
Noticed in Task Manager that VMware installer is running at about 14% CPU, but nothing is happening
I am really at a loss as to why I cannot install VMware Workstation 11.1.1, all other soft\ware installs fine.
Please could someone help me out?
Thanks
Peter

Import of 4.1 VMs into vSphere 6
Hi,
I have a number of 4.1 hosts and vCenter 4 with over 50 VMs. I recently got brand new hardware and installed vSphere 6 on the new kit. I also installed a new vCenter v6 server. Both the 4.1 and 6 environments look at the same SAN.
What is the safest and best method of migrating the 4.1 VMs into the v6 environment? Can I just browse the SAN and add to inventory in v6 environment?
Hope this isn't too stupid but can find confirmations anywhere.
Thanks in Advance

lost root password, how to reset it, how to preserve existing vms
I lost the password for the Esxi 5.1 host, is there a way to reset the password and preserve the existing vms? I was searching and found that by reinstalling and perform an upgrade it will allow me to change the password and preserve the vms?
I tried booting with Ubuntu but cannot mount the raid 5 partition. Please help, is it worth to purchase a support incident?
Registering your plugin package as a vCenter Server extension-Where Hosted server got crashed
Hi Laurent,
With the help of sdk guide i am able to succesfully register my plugin as an extention to vCenter.
And when login to webclient the plugin zip gets downloaded and deployed succesfully and i am able to see my plugin.
This is the success path for it.
However in the below usecase where
<url>http://a-web-server-path/mypluginPackage.zip</url>
Hosted server got down after registration to mob and before deployment of plugin module to webclient
it ends up with follwing error message in virgo logs:
Error downloading https://IP:PORT/MYplugin.zip. Make sure that the URL is reachable then logout/login to force another download. java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect
However after this when i restart my webserver where zip is hosted and tried to relogin to vsphere webclient
it still not deployed my zip and my plugin is not visible due to deployment failure.
Please share the possible options to handle this use case .
Thanks,
Abhishek
Seeking Suggestions: How to Organize/Partition Things In My Case
Hello, total vCenter Noob here. I have been tasked with setting up a virtualization infrastructure for a small software development company as a pilot project.
I have a VMware vSphere 5 Essentials license, three physical servers to play with (Xeon E5-1650, 32GB of RAM), as well as a Synology NAS with some iSCSI space available on it.
I have been able to get the basic things running, ESXi is installed and running on the three servers, vCenter is also running (on one of the three servers).
Where I’m having problems is how to setup and enforce “access controls” on the whole thing.
This is what management wants: one group (active directory group) to have access to and limited control of one of the servers and another group to have access to and limited control of the second server. The third server is to be sort of a catch all that only really IT is supposed to be using.
As an example of what’s required: group A is supposed to be able to create and use new VMs on one physical server and group B is supposed to be able to do the same thing on a second physical server but people from group A must be prevented from interfering with VMs on group B’s physical server and vice versa. In addition to that, there is a very strong push for keeping things as simple as possible. Ideally, local storage (2TB/server) should be favored to maximize performance (only one company wide gigabit LAN is currently available), though I understand that sharing local storage is not really possible across physical servers.
I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on a strategy that would achieve the required access controls while keeping things as simple as possible. I’m also wondering if running vCenter on one of the servers that vCenter is supposed to “manage” is a good idea. Can an automatic gracefully shut down be achieved during a power outage assuming each server has its own UPS?
PS, Each physical server is running an instance of vSphere Management Assistant (vMA) to handle “graceful” shutdown of server during a prolonged power outage (when UPS battery gets low) We are running on Eaton 5S 1500LCD UPSes that only offer USB connectivity.
Unable to Create Edge Gateway for Virtual Datacenter
Hello,
I am new to the vCD, when I tried to create an "Edge Gateway" for the virtual datacenter, it failed, saying:
Deployment of edge gateway PALEdgeGateway failed.
com.vmware.vcloud.fabric.nsm.error.VsmException: VSM response error (10105): Failed to publish configuration on vShield Edge. Failed to power on VM vse-PALEdgeGateway (66b92dc1-c973-4744-8c0e-88e2d2211eae)-0. (No host is compatible with the virtual machine.)
then I found this KB, suspecting that vShield Manager is not synced with vCD:
I followed the steps in this KB resolution, but still didn't work.
Does anyone have an idea ? Thanks a lot!
(We are using vCloud Director 5.5.0 1323688, vSphere Client 5.5.0 1281650)
Nginx website source files issue in Centos 6.5 Guest - VMware Player 6
Hi I hope someone can help me here. I have a Windows 8.1 host running Centos 6.5 through VMWare Player 6 and in Centos I have successfully created a LEMP stack utilizing virtual server blocks for different websites. For websites with source files within the guest OS sites are served perfectly. However I prefer a setup where source files reside in the host OS and the guest has access to them through mounted shares. With server blocks like this nginx throws an Access Denied error.I'm quite new to all the formentioned technologies and I've searched for a while now and cannot find an answer.
Embedded Database vs PostGRESQL
What is the difference between the embedded database and PostGRESQL? Do I need anything more than the Embedded database for a home lab setup?
vRO Database Performance Requirements
I'm running vRO in a non-production / small environment. When does the embedded vRO database no longer meet performance requirements? How many concurrent workflows can it take or what are the other performance indicators that will tell me I need to go with an external database?
NoClassDefFoundError (wrong name) for third party jar
Hi,
We have a html and java plugin which uses some third party jar libraries. We converted these jars to OSGi bundle. When virgo server is launched from eclipse (localhost:9443), the plugin works fine. The problem is when plugin is installed on a vcenter and launched from webclient connected to vcenter(vCenterDNS:9443), a NoClassDefFoundError thirdParty/pkg/C (wrong name: thirdParty/pkg/c) error is thrown as seen in virgo server logs (for a class in third party jar). All import-package, export-package statements look fine.
I am wondering why this works in development environment but not in vcenter?
One difference I notice is, in development environment, I place the jars in vsphere-client-sdk\server\repository\usr\ directory and also project buildpath points to it. In vcenter I see the jars at C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\cfg\vsphere-client\vc-packages\vsphere-client-serenity\myPlugin-1.0.0.0\ and I find the extracted jar at C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\WebClient\server\work\deployer\s\global\125. Development environment doesn't have any extracted copy of the jar in global directory.
VSAN IOPS Sizing Please Advise
Hello everyone,
I am fairly new to vsan, just been disconnected from it.
An ask came to me to size a vsan with FTT=1 where it can satisfy iops for 200 vms. Each vm is estimated at 25 IOPS.
Now i can add up disks in each host x number of hosts x iops per disk = total iops <--- is this right?!
I am confused if the SSD cache is going to contribute to the iops (which i think it would). There is no data on % reads/writes per vm.
Please guide me - tried googling but didnt find any good tools specific to this ask.
Thank you,
Ranjit
