Vmware workstation 8.0.4 unity mode artifacts (host: win7, guest: ubuntu 12.04)

I'm running vmware workstation 8.04 on windows 7, with an ubuntu 12.04 guest.  I'm using the gnome-classic w/ no effects login session (so no ubuntu unity, etc).  I can enter unity mode and all appears to be working just fine.  I run the latest Google Chrome and it pops up with no issue, but after about a minute, I get a ghost image, the same size as the chrome window, but offset by an inch down and inch to the left.  This ghost image shows the ubuntu wallpaper.  It blocks access to my windows desktop icons when there.  Minimizing chrome and re-opening resolves the issue for a few seconds.  Other apps do not appear to cause this issue.  Pages open at the time(if it matters) are gmail and google reader.

Any ideas?
