Hi All,

We are running vRealize Operation Manager Version 6.0.0.2263110 Build 2263110. Our Virtual Center is at the following version - 5.5 Update 1 Build 1945274

We are seeing the following Alert in our console

Adapter VC : Cannot retrieve Health Information from vCenter's Health Service located at URL: https://SERVERNAME:8443/vws

Does anyone know what this could be related to?

Every time we clear the alert it comes back.

How do I export historical time series data from VROPs?

$

VROPs has gotten a metric crap-ton better in the custom reporting and data export feature land.  However, I'm still running into one road block.  How do I export a CSV file of time series data for specific metrics for vSphere objects like ESX Clusters?  For instance, I would like to simply get a report that shows hourly memory usage values for every cluster for the last 7 days.  Sometimes, I would like to be able to export the daily memory maximum usage for the last 3 months for each cluster.

The reason for this is so that I can do my own analysis within Excel when needed for special projects.  This is to address analysis requests from management that just don't fit neatly into the VROPs out-of-the-box features.

Thanks in advance for any tips.  In past gigs, I build a capacity management system on top of Splunk that allowed custom slicing and dicing of any data. I'm hoping that VROPs can get me to that level of openness with their data.  Hotel California capacity management systems are not ideal.

I updated my vCO to 6.0.0. I'm no longer able to do GET or POST to run my workflow. When I'm browing to "https://{IP/Hostname}:8281/vco/api/workflows", I can't get anything anymore.

Does someone have any Idea ?

Hi,

I recently installed vrops 6 and i need to create some custom reports but i don't see any green plus symbol to create them... i only have the delete symbol, the run template symbol, and the actions symbol with the possibilty to export template.

I can see in the official documentation the green plus symbol : vrealize-operations-manager-60-cust-admin-guide.pdf

Procedure

1 In the left pane of vRealize Operations Manager, click the Content icon and click Reports.

2 On the Report Templates tab, click the plus sign to create a template.

and in these videos :

Do you see it on your vrops ? did i miss something ?

Things to check after install/upgrade?

Hi all,

I was wondering how do you verify that given vROps setup is OK. What do you think are the most important things to check after you install or upgrade a vROps instance? Any ideas will be highly appreciated!

Thanks!

alarm not triggered: Insufficient vSphere HA failover resources

$

Does this alarm only get triggered when an HA action fails?  I have a cluster of two ESXi 5.0 hosts, and since I am using way more than 50% of the available memory on each host, to me it looks like I cannot tolerate a single host failure.

RAMdistChart.PNG

HA and DRS are enabled on the cluster, and in "Admission Control Policy" I have "Percent of cluster resources reserved as failover" set at 50%.

So why no alarm?  My goal is to get an alert before we reach the state we're in now, where we apparently cannot tolerate a host failure.

vRealize Automation API and HTTP-REST

Hi,

The current version of the vcac plugin doesn't include Reservation management. I guess because is a new vRA API functionality.

¿How can I add vRA API as a HTTP-REST host in Orchestrator? The problem is the authorization based on tokens. You need to post a json on /identity/api to get the token and then use this value in a http header. I don't know how to achieve this.

¿Is a new version of vcac plugin coming with Reservation functionality soon?

Thanks a lot,

D.

Automatic DRS rule

All,

I have an 8 host cluster, 6 of the hosts are 5.5 and 2 are 5.1 (temporary until network team can update a vm that only supports 5.1)

I noticed that DRS was not working, after investigating a found a DRS rule that only included the 2 5.1 hosts.

Is VMware smart enough to create that rule? I certainly did not create it and the other 2 admins are telling me did not either.

where is host profile option Net.UseHwTSO?

I have a host profile that I'd like to apply to a host, but there are some issues that need to be ironed out. I'm getting the compliance error "The options Net.UseHwTSO have been changed from their expected default values", but I can't find Net.UseHwTSO in the tree of host policy options. If I could, I would just disable the policy for it. Or, maybe I could add a customization since only two machines have this different from the others. Any idea how to find this?

Community,

I am just new in VMwave and creating a home LAB for WAN optimization (i.e. Riverbed | IPANEMA | Silver-Peak) using mini-PC from Gigabyte.

Trying to install ESXi 5.1 and ESXi 5.5 using USB and CD/DVD, able to boot but stuck at initialization stage in ACPI and Storage respectively.

Basically, had added the required driver using the recommended procedure in this blog -> http://www.bussink.ch/?p=1228 but having the

same issue. Can you please help to provide a tip on fixing this issue?

Hardware Specification:

GB-BXi7-4770R (rev. 1.0)

Gigabyte M4HM87P-00

CPU: 4th generation Intel® Core™ i7-4770R 3.90 GHz

Memory: 16GB

Harddisk: MSATA - 500GB | SATA - 2.5 1TB

Issues:

Installing from CD and USB:

If ESXi 5.1, it freeze at the “Initializing ACPI” stage.

Installing from CD and USB:

If ESXi 5.5, it freeze at the “Initializing storage” stage.

If ESXi 5.5 been customize adding net-r8168/69, still it freeze at the “Initializing storage” stage.

VMWare Workstation 11 poor host performance

I've used VMware Workstation for years since I'm frequently called upon to run multiple Server VMs as part of my consulting practice.  After using Workstation 10 for the last couple years I recently upgraded to Workstation 11.  Within a few days after the upgrade I began to notice hesitation while typing, mousing or scrolling in both the host and guest environments.  System activity is not higher than normal during these pauses and nothing ever hangs permanently.  But it makes the system very difficult to use.  Today I downgraded from Workstation 11 back to Workstation 10 and the problems immediately went away after rebooting.  I'm running on a Lenovo W-520 with 3 internal SSD drives and 32 GB RAM on Windows 8.1 Pro, so its not a lack of resources.  I've been running 6 VMs concurrently using about 24 GB total memory in Workstation 10 for several hours this afternoon with no hesitations.  So it really seems to be something in Workstation 11 causing the issue.  Anyone else seen similar issues?

Windows 10, Workstation 10, no LAN bridge

Hi!

So, I'm running Windows 10, 64x tech preview. VMware workstation (latest greatest build (10.0.3) installs and it works just fine.

I always link a VMnet to a dedicated physical NIC. (bridge), however, even though I'm able to configure it, it simply doesn't work. The VMnet works fine internally on workstation, but not a single packet seems to be able to transfer to the host.

No firewall running, the VMware bridge drive is installed properly. When I create a host adapter for a virtual network and bridge it with the physical one it works, too. But a direct bridge doesn't work.

Can anyone running Windows 10 64x tech preview confirm this? It's quite simple configured as below.

SQL 2012 logging is not working

I installed Log Insight Manager 2.5 GA (Version 2.5.0-2347850) and installed the agent on a SQL 2012 Standard server and also installed the SQL management pack but nothing is showing up in Log Insight.

Here is my liagent.ini file entry for SQL which I got off of a tutorial online.

[filelog|SQL2012]

directory=C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MYSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log\

include=ERRORLOG.log

exclude=*.trc

charset=UTF-16LE

event_marker=^\d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2} \d{2}:\d{2}:\d{2}\.\d{2}

And here are some entries from the liagent log.

2015-02-17 09:07:55.202336 0x00000968 <warng> FLogCollector:692  | Currently there are no log files passing through the 'include'/'exclude' file name filter for channel <SQL2012>.

2015-02-17 09:07:55.202336 0x00000968 <trace> FLogCollector:246  | Subscribed to channel <SQL2012>.

Is this a configuration issue? I set it up on another SQL server and will see if that does the same thing.

SRM 5.8 - Protection Group unavailable

Hi there

I've run into a problem and can't figure a solution at all.  I'm running SRM 5.8 trial edition for Uni Project work along with HP StoreVirtual VSA creating a Virtual SAN.  I'm using SRA 10.5.0.92 which seems to be the correct version required for SRM 5.8 and while SRM is detecting my Replications in vCenter Web Management, it is not recognising a datastore, thus when I come to create a protection group I am presented with the error message:

2015-02-18_2303.png

I definitely have an ESX datastore which is being replicated and the datastore has virtual machines on it.

2015-02-18_2305.png

I've been literally banging my head against a wall for the past 2 weeks-ish trying to figure out what's going wrong.

The SRM logs seemingly indicate that all my storage devices are being skipped under detection as they are "neither iSCSI or FC"

The first 3 are correct as they are standard SATA disks but the final entry is my iSCSI target from the HP LeftHand.

2015-02-18_2317.png

Ignoring the last entry which was a test target and currently inactive, the Server Volume (iSCSI) is volume being presented from HP LeftHand, and all the vHosts in the primary group have access to it.  vCenter confirms this as it can read the datastore.

I've no idea what else to try and was wondering if anyone has experienced this problem.

High CPU Ready for for a single VM located on dedicated ESX host

$

I am newbie to vm world and have no experience in vm adminstration. I have a Windows VM guest say VM1 located on a ESX host ESX1.

ESX1, physical blade has 8 cpus /16 logical processors.

On VM1, the resources were allocated "custom" 90000 shares and set to have 16 cores.

The issue we are facing is some times VM1 gets unresponsive. A simple reboot fixes the issue. However I would like to find the root cause. The CPU utilization, memory on the VM is fine. So is the case with the ESX host. However we find that the cpu ready value is high. Is this the reason why our vm is getting unresponsive?

-------

Since this is a one VM1 per one ESX1, I am bit confused why we are finding  high "cpu ready" value.

CPU ready (percentage) is the percentage of time a virtual machine is waiting to be scheduled onto a physical (or HT) core by the CPU scheduler.

Since my ESX1 and VM1 both got 16 cores, I am bit confused why we have the high CPU Ready value? what could be the reason why VM is getting unresponsive?

VMWare 5.5: Migrate VM to other Host very slow compared to a file copied inside two VMs between the same two host that where used for migration.

$

We are using VMWare 5.5 Essentials with 2 hosts. Each host got its own direct attached storage.

When i copy a file (30GB) in Windows from VM A (on HostA) to a VM B (on HostB) i ve got 10 times the speed of a migration of any VM between these same two hosts.

As VMWare Essentials does not include vmotion, and we do not have a SAN, the VM that is moved between hosts is always turned off.

As the migration process its at a very constant - but slow - speed, it seems to be limited by some sort of (software) configuration. I have to repeat the above observations:

A copy between these to hosts inside of VMs gives me 10 times the speed of a offline vMotion, so this cant be a hardware issue of any kind.

Whats wrong here that the speed of moving a VM (offline vMotion?) is so incredible slow compared to normal VM operation.

(To the network configuration: no magic here: one NIC connected, one virtual standard switch on each host, no traffic shaping configured)

TIA

Gregor Stefka

PS: Please let me know, if i can provide any further information to resolve this issue.

Storage Quota Math

$

Today I provisioned a vDC for a new customer that needed to have a catalog of 3 vApps, and 25 of each template deployed at a given time.  This is for a class so each one would be deployed and then deleted when that section is complete.  So the idea was to calculate the storage quota based on the catalog entires + (the largest vApp x 25).

vApp Template 1 = 522GB

vApp Template 2 = 522GB

vApp Template 3 = 792GB

All vApp Templates = 1,836GB

Largest vApp x 25 = 19,800GB

Sum of all this = 21,636GB

I ended up configuring the storage quota as 22TB just to play it safe but for some reason the customer still hit the quota and could only deploy 24 vApps.  When I took a look at the vDC storage policy it showed that something like 21,7xx was being requested.  I feel like I must be over looking something simple or not accounting for something.  So my question is...

Where is extra storage coming from? VSEs? Linked Clones?
